ONE WORLD PROVES HIS CLASS IN CAPE MILE

Kerry Jack News

Ken Truter and Etienne Braun, part-owners of four-year-old One World, were both considering medical advice following their star colt’s latest success for trainer Vaughan Marshall in the Cape Mile at Kenilworth on Saturday.

One World appeared to make hard work of a race he was always going to win easily on paper and Truter, who’d thought his charge was in big trouble halfway home, said after the race: “I was a bundle of nerves and I am so relieved it’s over” while Braun added: “I think I aged ten years at the 400m!”

Luckily for both, One World is the kind of horse who knows how good he is. He gathered himself going into the last 200m, pulled jockey Anton Marcus into the lead and drew away effortlessly to win by 2.25-lengths.

Marcus, too, said he started thinking of One World’s apparently lacklustre showing in in the early part of last month’s Matchem Stakes and commented: “I thought MJ Byleveld rode the most amazing race that day and here, just prior to turning for home, One World had a tendency to lug in.

“I tried to get him on the rail but Corne Orffer (on Charles) kept me out – and rightly so. Early in the straight I was worried but I knew I had the ratings. This horse doesn’t want to lose. He helps you and he gets you out of it!”

Marshall said that, in his view, horses ‘lugging it out in front’, find it hard to win the big races, hence his decision to teach One World to be more versatile, to race from off the pace.

The trainer said: “I am proud of him. After the Green Point it’s the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Then it’s lullah time before we go to Durban.”

One World, a R425,000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale purchase, took his earnings to R3 551 875, with his previous victories including scores in all of the G2 Concorde Cup, G3 Matchem Stakes, G3 Winter Guineas and CTS 1600. His sire Captain Al, whose current number of stakes winners stands at 97, had another excellent season in 2018-2019, with his notable representatives including the Equus Champions Celtic and Kasimir. A multiple champion sire, and eight times leading sire of 2yos, Captain Al has two lots on the upcoming CTS Ready To Run Sale.
